Blue Dragon Book Fair at Ngaio Town Hall
Saturday 28 May 9am to 4pm AND Sunday 29 May 9am to 2pm.
Please come and buy books, puzzles/games, DVDs and CDs. Children’s books are $1 each. Other books are $3 (and $2 each, after the first five books purchased). We have a huge number of top quality books and other items. Come and buy for yourself or for others.
All proceeds will go to the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation, which helps to break the poverty cycle for Vietnam’s poorest children. This includes street kids, children with disabilities, children from rural families living in extreme poverty, and victims of human trafficking and slavery. Last year we raised $18,000 – we hope to do at least as well this year.
If you have good quality books to donate, please be in touch. We are particularly happy to have more children’s books.

FAMILY TIMES SUMMER ISSUE
|I finished up as editor of Family Times back in 2018 to have my third baby. I am so excited to be back, working with a team of lovely, talented women to bring this wonderful magazine to you.|
Our Autumn Issue is all about making the best choices for our families and having fun together. We cover the impact of masks and phones on babies and delve into the early learning options in NZ as well as home-schooling; we also embrace craft ideas and science, and share tips for fun caravanning adventures and outings on bikes.
It can be tricky making plans at the moment, but with the holidays just around the corner, it’s a good idea to have things to look forward to. Our family is planning a trip over to Quail Island during the break, and when the weather and moods are favourable we’ll go on some bike rides down our local riverbank – no doubt with the songs from Encanto blasting from my phone.
I hope you all manage to enjoy some adventures with your families over the break.

Aikido for juniors
Aikido is a martial art with a difference, its focus being on defence rather than attack: a non-violent, defensive art. Aikido is renowned for its benefits for self-control, co-ordination and posture, and like all martial arts promotes confidence and provides fun, fitness and friendship. We are seeking more juniors students: being very safety-conscious we stopped training during last year’s restrictions, and in Term 1 2022, and are building up our lively classes. We are a not-for-profit organisation teaching the art of aikido, based in Kaiwharawhara, in our 28th year. Classes Monday (Kids, around 6+ to 12 years) and Wednesday (Teens) 5:30pm during school terms, $80 per term. Older teens can join in our adults classes. City Dojo, 132 Hutt Rd, Kaiwharawhara, Wellington, directly above Animates pet shop. Turn up and give it a try – first 3 lessons free. And parents, we have beginner classes at 6:30pm for you too :-). Reach Education, Mathematics Programme
Reaching Competence, by Reach Education, is a mathematics programme presented in booklet form that is aligned with the the New Zealand curriculum. It involves a range of activities including worksheets, hands-on tangible play, board games and online applications that parents can use at home to support their children with their maths. Our aim is to deliver our programme to parents and caregivers at a price they can afford, and at a time when it is suitable for the family. Our booklets start from just $20 and we also have maths resources available for purchase on our website.
Reach Education is directed by JJ Purton Jones, who holds a Master in Professional Studies in Education and is herself a qualified primary school teacher, and Lucy Patston, who holds a PhD in Cognitive Psychology, has taught in the tertiary sector for over 15 years, and has (nearly) three children at primary school. We are passionate about empowering informed parents and caregivers to help improve their children’s maths confidence and skills in an affordable manner that delivers quality time and connection to both parties.
We ask for your support in tapping our parent/caregiver market to promote this product, which we believe can help so many NZ children in a fun, colourful and interactive way.
Please free feel to have a look at the samples available on our website: www.reacheducation.co.nz
Due to demand, Ni Hao Children’s Community Charitable Trust is providing Beginners Mandarin classes (Level 1) in the Khandallah area, on Tuesdays 3:30-4:40pm at The Village Church. This is open to children in Years 1 to 8 (however if there is large mix of ages, we will split into two classes: Years 1-4 and Years 5-8).
Your child will learn Mandarin Chinese as a Foreign/Additional Conversational Language in a fun and engaging way, in a full immersion environment with their peers. Our programme is for those from non-Chinese backgrounds and Chinese heritage families who do not use Mandarin.
The children will learn in a way that is meaningful and relevant to life (practical, not academic), with social interaction/conversation, games, raps. We do not spend time painting or making crafts as the focus is on developing oral language skills. Your children will also be introduced to some basic Chinese character writing related to the curriculum. (Please note that learning a new language once a week is a long term commitment. Our programme is planned for children to attend consecutive terms / school years).
Please email us at email@example.com or visit nihaocc.org.nz for more info, view the schedule and to sign up for a trial! There are also opportunities to provide lunchtime or after school classes in your child’s school if the school permits and has suitable space.
